What Are Vintage Wall Pockets?

Vintage wall pockets are flat backed so they can easily be hung on the wall and can be found in a variety of different materials including porcelain, ceramic, cloth, plastic, metal, wood, or glass. The majority were made out of glass or ceramic pottery and they are also referred to as "wall vases" or "wall planters". They experienced the height of their popularity in the United States in between the two world wars.

What are they used for?
Depending on their shape, they are great for holding a bit of water for fresh flowers or ivy or other types of annuals and perennials and even small edibles such as herbs. Because of their relatively small size, they are usually pretty easy to care for however use caution when displaying your wall pocket on an area where there is a lot of direct sunlight as this can cause the plants wilt and dry out. Wall pockets are also a great way to bring your plants indoors during the colder winter months.
Other uses for vintage wall pockets are for mail holders or sorters, ivy or moss pot, vegetables, herbs or as more decorative rather than functional by adding colorful stones with ornamental or faux plants or even succulents. Wall pockets are not to be confused with wall sconces which pertain to lighting or with wall plaques which serve no purpose and are for decorative use only.

History of Wall Pockets
Originally wall pockets were made of either cloth, which was used to store scissors, needles, and thread, or of wood, which would be used for storing pipes, candles, matches, and even eating utensils. Around the 18th century, porcelain wall pockets began to be seen first as imports from the UK. During that time, these would be reserved for only the wealthy but the Industrial Revolution created new less expensive methods of production and thus lowered the prices of porcelain along with many other goods, which only cause their popularity to skyrocket!

Today, the most sought after wall planters are usually beautiful pottery pieces created by Roseville and the prices can be seriously surprising, with one piece called, "Baneda", created in 1932, selling for $2995.00! Other popular styles include the midcentury chalkware wall pockets.
