Happy New Year! Top Ten New Year's Traditions to Start for 2022

Let me start by wishing you a Happy New Year from TheVintageVixenShop!! I hope 2022 is a year of self discovery, realized dreams, and conquered fears for you! For TheVintageVixenShop, I hope 2022 brings new customers, successful hunts, and of course more beautiful, rare treasures to share with all of you.

I won't be making any resolutions this year and I didn't end 2021 at a party, but there are plenty of superstitions about what one should and shouldn't be doing on New Year's Day that I will share with you this week. Some you may already be aware of or even may already be practicing such as Take down your Christmas decorations before the New Year begins or you'll have bad luck in the new year, or perhaps the favorite of many Southern grandmas that you must Consume black-eyed peas, cornbread, and collards on New Year's Day to bring fortune and wealth. But as I found out while googling the reasons my husband needed to take the Christmas lights off the house today instead of tomorrow, there are many you may have never heard of and even a few that make you want to begin a new tradition with your family.

Check out my picks for some of the strangest New Year's traditions and superstitions from throughout the years...

1.) Don't wash any laundry on New Year's Day.

The reasoning behind this one is pretty eerie actually and it is that if you do wash laundry on New Year's Day, the year will bring death to a member of your family! To me, this would be a great new tradition to start this year just in case there could be any truth to its dire warning obviously. And it doesn't hurt that it means I don't have to do any laundry! 🤣

And while I'm finding reasons to avoid doing any housework on New Year's Day ever again, add number two to the list.

2.) Do not do any sweeping on New Year's Day.

If you ignore this superstition, you may be sweeping away any good luck that was headed your way for 2022 according to folklore.

There are that New Year's traditions that must be done right at the stroke of midnight in order to whatever harm may come your way should you choose to ignore the warning. The ones I found interesting enough to make the list are up next.

3.) Eat 12 grapes.

Supposedly doing this correctly means you will bring you good luck for all of the following year.

The next one on the list is simple enough and I like the reasoning for it too. It also needs to be done at twelve as you bring in the new year.

4.) Open the windows and doors of your home.

This is an important one because this allows you let go of the past by allowing the old year out and also making room for the new year to come in. I liked this one because it reminded me that there was more than one part of 2021 that I would be grateful to just leave there and start off 2022 with a clean slate.

5.) Make a lot of loud noises.

The reason you want to be super loud or use noisemakers at a party is because it is said that doing so will startle any ghosts of the past year that have been haunting you and make them leave your home and your life.

The cautionary reason goes well with number four and once again I am reminded that I apparently really have some letting go to do in 2022.

6.) Kiss your significant other right at midnight.

This one is probably the most well known one on the list and even has it own accompanying catchphrase, "Kiss the person you hope to keep kissing" in the following year. Also apparently, choosing not do so will mean obviously do not value harmony and happiness in your relationship.

Number 7 on the list is one that will take a little more preparation ahead of time.

7.) Be sure to fill up those refrigerators and pantries!

Do not bring in the new year without plenty of food in the house if want 2022 to be a year of fruitfulness in your home. Superstition says that starting off the new year with empty cabinets will bring a year of poverty or hardships.

And if your kids are anything like mine, having an empty refrigerator will also bring plenty of whining and no one wants that, right?

8.) Save your tears for another day.

Stay away from any romantic chick flick movie marathons or sad puppy commercials all of New Year's Day. Legend is that if you do end up crying, you'll stay that way setting a year of sadness into motion.

The next one on the list relates to a intimate item of the clothing you should be wearing to ring in the new year.

9.) Wear yellow underwear.

If you want to have financial success in 2022, folklore says all you need to do is be wearing yellow underwear at midnight to make it happen. Additionally, if love is all you need, your unmentionables should be red instead.

The last New Year's tradition I learned about is number ten on the list.

10.) Do not take anything out of your house on New Year's Day.

The message of this superstition is meant to be taken pretty literally meaning don't take anything out the doors of your home all day. That would include taking something out to the car, or even throwing out the trash. If you do, you will be letting all the good luck and fortune you've acquired by doing the previous items in the list thus far, and it will not come back to you all year long.

I'm not normally a superstitious person, but in the sake of a bonafide "No housework allowed" day, there are definitely some traditions on this list that I will be giving a second thought to. Let me know which ones you had heard of before or if you currently abide by any on the list.
